Living Classrooms Foundation
Living Classrooms Foundation strengthens communities and inspires young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural and maritime resources as "living classrooms." Fresh start is an award winning 40 week program providing services through vocational, academic, and social skills development training to high risk, out of school males ages 16-19, most of whom are referred by the Maryland State Department of Juvenile Services. Fresh Start is designed to mirror the workplace by giving participants an opportunity to practice job skills and attitudes as well as interpersonal skills that will help them in their careers and future endeavors. In addition to GED preparation classes the program uses carpentry and woodworking as a medium to teach skills that are needed to be successful in any job: punctuality, cooperation, self-motivation, efficiency, work quality and staying on task. As a part of Fresh Start, students build toolboxes and a line of outdoor furniture that are available for purchase. Profits from this student-run business go into the student account and students receive their share upon graduation from the program. For more information, please visit www.livingclassrooms.org.
